The bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease already live in your mouth. By having a good and consistent oral hygiene routine, you remove more of these bacteria, which keeps them under control.

Keeping your mouth healthy requires you to do routine maintenance. That may not be how you think of preventive dental care, but it is the best approach to keeping your smile healthy for as long as possible.

We encourage everyone to schedule regular visits to our Charlotte, NC office for this reason, but we want to send a special reminder for patients with dental insurance.

Follow These Easy Steps

You don’t want tooth decay. You also don’t want gum disease. Knowing this, it’s worth a quick refresher on the American Dental Association’s recommended guidelines for your oral health.

  • Brush daily — You should scrub your teeth (but not too hard) twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste with fluoride and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Floss daily — Brushing your teeth does remove a lot of bacteria and plaque. However, it’s not the best way to clean between your teeth or between your teeth and gums. By using dental floss, flossers, or a water flosser, you can get rid of bacteria and food particles from those harder to clean spaces.
  • Get Regular Dental Cleanings and Exams — Most people don’t brush and floss perfectly every time, and surveys should that most people don’t floss every day, either. Professional cleanings and exams are your next line of defense. We can remove plaque and tartar buildup that you may have missed.

Most people (more than 90 percent) will have at least one cavity in their lives. And most people (estimates ranges from 70 to 85 percent) of people will develop gum disease at some people as well. If you are among them, we would much rather find these problems in the early stages.

It would be great if you never needed a filling, but that is still preferable to a root canal or an advanced gum disease treatment.

Don’t Lose Your Benefits

Of course, we can only help if you visit us.

That’s why hope to see you before the end of the year. If you have dental insurance, this is important for another reason as well.

Many dental plans cover most or all the costs of preventive treatments during the calendar year. (Please check your particular policy for details.) You are already paying the premiums for your coverage (see: your paystub), which means you are likely paying for one or two cleanings already.

If you don’t get your check, it’s like paying for a vacation but not taking the trip. Don’t let your window of opportunity close. Don’t lose the benefits you’ve been paying for all year.

If you don’t have insurance, please note that we have a variety of payment options, including financing options to make oral care fit in your budget.

Keep Smiling

Don’t lose your smile to a preventable or treatable problem. Plan to visit McNulty & Dancausse General Dentistry before the end of the year.
