The first visit is a kind of get-to-know-you visit. We want to know what their medical history is, we want to know what their dental history has been. Sometimes, patients come to us and they're very fearful about the whole process because of something bad that's happened in the past. So, we try to be very aware of that, where they're coming from. Then, we're going to do a very thorough clinical exam. We want to make sure that all the soft tissues of the mouth are healthy. We do oral cancer examination as part of every new patient exam. Of course, we're dentists, we're interested in teeth also, so we'll do a very close check of the teeth, but the supporting structure is very important too. So, the gums and the bone support, we need to know what the foundation is before we can make sure that the whole mouth is healthy. We want a good foundation also.

I hope their first impression is one of great welcome. We're welcoming them here, we’re interested in who they are, we want to make their first visit as comfortable as possible and really kind of listen to what they've got going on and what their concerns are. We're always very careful about making the anesthetic as comfortable as possible. We use something called a “topical anesthetic” that, when left in place long enough, can make injections and things like that almost unnoticeable. We've got staff that are caring and try to make the experience as comfortable as possible that way too.
We have also [inunadible], which is—a common term for that is “laughing gas,” but it's something for folks who have some anxiety about dentistry. We can use that and it helps to take the edge off to make it a little bit better for folks.
Our office has made the commitment to going green by transitioning to a paperless system called YAPI. Not only will this make your patient records more secure, but upgrading our systems to the cloud will allow us to offer better services by locating your medical and dental files more quickly, updating them more accurately, and sharing them more seamlessly with approved family members or other medical providers that appear on the “approved” list provided by you.
